Checking Email

A while ago folks in my contact list received an "encrypted message" from some entity pretending to be me. The message instructed the receipients to click a link to read the message.  That is always a bad idea unless you have 100% trust in the sources.

I spent some time reading up on how messages are digitally "signed" to alert SPAM filters to block them. I've enabled some checks on my domain to ensure that my email messages are signed. How will you see this "signature?

When looking at an email message click on the three dots on the right of the message. On the pull down click on Show original.

Screen shot of mail message

This will open a detailed  window containing infirmation about the sender. Also a PASS status for the SPF, DKIM and DMARC. You can read about those if you want to numb your mind. PASS is good.

Phishing or Spamming Email

I found a questionable email in my spam folder which we'll look at as an example.

When I checked the three dots  and "show original" I can see it failed the DMARC check

Failed DMARC check

When in doubt, check the original using the three dots!
