Over the years I created several other blogs and a few websites. I finally settled down a bit and decided to put my energy into a self-hosted Wordpress site named <a href="https://poltrack.net/" target="_blank">My Strange Life</a>.</div><div><br /></div><h1 style="text-align: left;">The Orphans</h1><div>What was to become of these sites after I stopped adding content? Nothing at all. Everything on the internet seems to last forever, or at least in the span of a lifetime. There are multiple orphans and WebCrawlers dutifully work their way through the internet finding links and keywords. I won't delete this blog but want want to freshen it up a bit with new information.</div><div><br /></div><h1 style="text-align: left;">My Strange Life</h1><div>Below is a RSS "ticker tape" of my latest postings on my website My Strange Life. They were pioneers in television technology. They were famous for their Cathode Ray Tubes, which is the heart of an Oscilloscope.</p><h1 style="text-align: left;">What the hell is an Oscilloscope?</h1><div>In my opinion an oscilloscope is the ultimate electronic test instrument. It can graph an electrical signal in X-Y coordinates and display it on a CRT screen. If you've ever watched <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Outer_Limits" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Outer Limits</a> or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ernie_Kovacs_Show" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Ernie Kovacs</a>, you've seen an oscilloscope display.</div><div><br /></div><div>Usually the electrical signal is plotted against time but if two sinusoidal signal are plotted against each other, you can get some interesting "outer limits" type displays known as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lissajous_curve" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Lissajous curves</a>. It also can act as an voltmeter displaying voltage as a straight line on a grid.</div><div><br /></div><div>I was able to use some really nice <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lissajous_curve" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Tektronix</a> oscilloscopes in my years at Digital Equipment Corporation, so I consider myself a s fairly adept with understanding them.</div><h1 style="text-align: left;">Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC)</h1><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiy-zgaoQ8nmCGvnHzBwPmH32kA_aiwFCY0tav8WcVbAW0xgf9s0Bcbg6OoaThNPF4zqyqemb6mu2X0BDW6Zv7J_agdwuAnF-TyvIpOaopWlrPUnAQl5mkajQDclXdI15nNo9OBhylx4bYGSM1ztoRiIHZEuxrsXU5jPvK7-s5cNfTheGey72C7EzJIWw=s1384" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Checking Voltages" border="0" data-original-height="1089" data-original-width="1384" height="504" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiy-zgaoQ8nmCGvnHzBwPmH32kA_aiwFCY0tav8WcVbAW0xgf9s0Bcbg6OoaThNPF4zqyqemb6mu2X0BDW6Zv7J_agdwuAnF-TyvIpOaopWlrPUnAQl5mkajQDclXdI15nNo9OBhylx4bYGSM1ztoRiIHZEuxrsXU5jPvK7-s5cNfTheGey72C7EzJIWw=w640-h504" title="Checking Voltages" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div>This is not a photo of an oscilloscope. I was checking the voltage levels of power supplies with a <a href="Checking Voltages" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Fluke</a> multimeter. Years before this photo was taken my first job was working on timing boards for the PDP 11/45 Microprocessor. I used a Tektronix oscilloscope to assure that I had a nice clean clock pulse from the board. If it had extra humps I would remove a transistor till I found a good one. It was a weird job but I had plenty of time with that scope.</div><h1 style="text-align: left;">Baby Toy</h1><div>I don't even remember how or why this happened, but I asked to take an Oscilloscope home. I wanted to show my young son what his dad did everyday. This probably happened in 1977. I set it up on the dining room table and let him twist all the knobs. I used the onboard square wave generator as a display. He seemed to enjoy it.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEibpuo3OyRtOlw0AgflH7sj6tyMoKLiPsWdcllbaTlEMUSWke9fZk5sFI8K1mjBL1fb6sZvdg0NjG7uLDNE-UZSFz7eBydXL6nuZzYtrBWPEe__8xRR1W4oz-e-qdYVBdCfUyQfMJetoGgGbDbpFOdn9UK9CayEb2X-tv7gz74gzXSlD0mTJaladVrmkw=s2015" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Square Wave" border="0" data-original-height="1343" data-original-width="2015" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEibpuo3OyRtOlw0AgflH7sj6tyMoKLiPsWdcllbaTlEMUSWke9fZk5sFI8K1mjBL1fb6sZvdg0NjG7uLDNE-UZSFz7eBydXL6nuZzYtrBWPEe__8xRR1W4oz-e-qdYVBdCfUyQfMJetoGgGbDbpFOdn9UK9CayEb2X-tv7gz74gzXSlD0mTJaladVrmkw=w640-h426" title="Square Wave" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgW18mRHwqNVMRqXghhcuTluEecvsUyZnELLdesQEdzww6LTwiF4SXa-Jq3fL-eDeABVgHloZokPnDeJBTFVs4vblVvpmbCqbWNc5_YbYplKHijZ1krIHx2W7Kdpuw167u4xh-amfMMpcJwYPrKGFrF_98uLU9UhQjrGQnfMjf10p_UM0byQWmt64vd5A=s2047" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Square Wave" border="0" data-original-height="2047" data-original-width="1364" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgW18mRHwqNVMRqXghhcuTluEecvsUyZnELLdesQEdzww6LTwiF4SXa-Jq3fL-eDeABVgHloZokPnDeJBTFVs4vblVvpmbCqbWNc5_YbYplKHijZ1krIHx2W7Kdpuw167u4xh-amfMMpcJwYPrKGFrF_98uLU9UhQjrGQnfMjf10p_UM0byQWmt64vd5A=w426-h640" title="Square Wave" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><h1 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Final Thoughts</h1><div>I actually considered bringing this thing home from the dump (I mean transfer station). It was fully active from the time it was built around 1850 to 1950. It served the textile industry, chair industry, and wood turning industry, serving New Ipswich, N.H. Temple, NH, and Greenville farmers.</p><p>There were three round trips of the passenger trains per day, six days a week and one round trip on Sundays. The hours of departure at 6.45A.M., return at 10.15AM, next train departure 11.45 AM. return at 215P.M., last train departure at 4.45 P.M., return at 7.15 P.M. Sunday departure at 6.45 A.M., return at 4.00 P.M.</p><p>Mileage to Ayer Junction Mass. was about twenty miles going through Pratt Station, Mason N.H, West Townsend, Townsend Center, Townsend Harbor, West Groton and Ayer Mass. There was freight service six days a week, once every day. Ayer Junction terminal has served passengers and freight traffic coming from Boston on the Fitchburg Division, from Lowell Mass., from Worcester, Mass., to Portland, Maine via Nashua, N.H. and Rochester, N.H.. On the Greenville line, there was at Vose, a branch Line to Milford, N.H. spur</p><p>In 1940 some side tracks were removed and changed, and in 1943 more tracks were removed. In 1951 the</p><p>old freight house formerly the old depot and spur line running to the Chair Shop Ware house and to Taft's coal shed were removed. In 1960 and 1968 there was a general revision of physical features and lines, and in 1979 the line was abandoned.</p><p>The railroad trestle map is inserted on the lower left, corner of the map. The trestle's steel work was dismantled and junked in 1985. Only the granite pillars were left standing. The length of the trestle was 611feet and the height 97 feet. The original wooden trestle was built in 1851, and it burned in 1907 and was rebuilt in 1908 of all steel on the same granite pillars and four extra steel pillars.</p><p>The town of Greenville had prospered very much in the early years because the railroad had open way for the people to travel everywhere in this country and to Canada to there own needs and conveniences. It was also an adventure for young folks to walk along the tracks on Sunday afternoon way down to Pratt Station to gather Mayflowers and pussy willows, then get on the 4.00PM. train and back home. This is another era that has passed away. the gate</p><p>By: Emerick Lamontagne</p></blockquote><h2 style="text-align: left;">The Original and Replacement Trestles</h2><h3 style="text-align: left;">Wooden Trestle built in 1851, burned in 1907</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjnq-c4gQLBmeTiNJl7mSX7dFXM4B6mpnjJ-_ZZK7Hz2R5T08GazePljXXF5qNKPITLvF88_i4rUF2zdteAh-tW748iI7njX9fYsQ1A4KZuK3hpkWFAzakMMoediVmfpBy66zD8jZsSVUu6L9QihTRr2MrqlQPk5v_44Ih7W26jsPHmR_wlWx75GP1oaQ=s3264" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Greenville Trestle" border="0" data-original-height="2022" data-original-width="3264" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjnq-c4gQLBmeTiNJl7mSX7dFXM4B6mpnjJ-_ZZK7Hz2R5T08GazePljXXF5qNKPITLvF88_i4rUF2zdteAh-tW748iI7njX9fYsQ1A4KZuK3hpkWFAzakMMoediVmfpBy66zD8jZsSVUu6L9QihTRr2MrqlQPk5v_44Ih7W26jsPHmR_wlWx75GP1oaQ=w640-h396" title="Greenville Trestle, built 1851, burned 1907" width="640" /></a></div><br /><h3 style="text-align: left;">Steel Trestle built 1908, now dismantled</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh8SLi_J_cnXS0d1sw2brEPCTN0sD-HnPmNj_53OSVLvoy6YMJTe_pIz4jORmWgG56LKueg_gcaJcjNCDfo2PBO68-dndtSnJV13OBAJVXjZENU13Tw7vXKHqpVb79lFUyeJ-A64KKJ3QZzPHyFDMajNaTjvC5zeMTsWttOv9LVTWekTViBpBYDGZeD2A=s2708" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Greenville Trestle" border="0" data-original-height="2030" data-original-width="2708" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh8SLi_J_cnXS0d1sw2brEPCTN0sD-HnPmNj_53OSVLvoy6YMJTe_pIz4jORmWgG56LKueg_gcaJcjNCDfo2PBO68-dndtSnJV13OBAJVXjZENU13Tw7vXKHqpVb79lFUyeJ-A64KKJ3QZzPHyFDMajNaTjvC5zeMTsWttOv9LVTWekTViBpBYDGZeD2A=w640-h480" title="Greenville Trestle, built 1908" width="640" /></a></div><br /><h2 style="text-align: left;">Map of Rail Yard</h2><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEifwhDZtwzGbKiewKIlOJhxEwiWS1b4SmwEfPnkXnRsLZgwGdPbJSLogOckjLPKhqdb2swplUeer8xTN1S1fO3UWSywWtPoQu8DMcrnmzrLPMflo8PxUit46PhP4raZ8qpNfk2hMQZZFidN7e8cvdtHcGHTViXH5aw34asOME_PnJOt6yz5CfLMsOEXMQ=s4826" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Greenville Rail Yard Map" border="0" data-original-height="2242" data-original-width="4826" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEifwhDZtwzGbKiewKIlOJhxEwiWS1b4SmwEfPnkXnRsLZgwGdPbJSLogOckjLPKhqdb2swplUeer8xTN1S1fO3UWSywWtPoQu8DMcrnmzrLPMflo8PxUit46PhP4raZ8qpNfk2hMQZZFidN7e8cvdtHcGHTViXH5aw34asOME_PnJOt6yz5CfLMsOEXMQ=w640-h298" title="Greenville Rail Yard Map" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><p> </p>Poltrack Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06816547964472411885noreply@blogger.com0Greenville, NH, USA42.7673195 -71.81229139999999214.457085663821154 -106.96854139999999 71.077553336178852 -36.656041399999992tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2788978455476991740.post-4390937740961801432022-01-26T05:56:00.001-05:002022-01-26T06:01:25.628-05:00Appleton Academy Senior Class Trip 1958<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEggoPV-Sr7Fy4qbin90Pb-6XFQcLes3kaOahtxDU6m_tSktu4TVXlS_e2kACzKTdBtGqtI4ViThqjjCMaXB2FfSVw0tRw8JpWsY1QjSztxzTvpqZa6Yhr4NZwuD1f1JyX0wb2V4W7yo7zYHF4euFQB_qIjT1Ohz_X3JSYj9qu4LXqvahDMARZe12i34-Q=s4714" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Appleton Academy students 1958" border="0" data-original-height="2425" data-original-width="4714" height="330" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEggoPV-Sr7Fy4qbin90Pb-6XFQcLes3kaOahtxDU6m_tSktu4TVXlS_e2kACzKTdBtGqtI4ViThqjjCMaXB2FfSVw0tRw8JpWsY1QjSztxzTvpqZa6Yhr4NZwuD1f1JyX0wb2V4W7yo7zYHF4euFQB_qIjT1Ohz_X3JSYj9qu4LXqvahDMARZe12i34-Q=w640-h330" title="Appleton Academy students in Washtington, DC = April 1958" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>The <a href="https://poltrack.blogspot.com/2022/01/appleton-academy-class-trip-1946.html" target="_blank">1946 Appleton class photo</a> brought back some memories for some readers. Center village is bounded roughly by Turnpike Road, Porter Hill Road, Main Street, Route 123A, Preston Hill Road, Manley Road and King Road.</p><p>This is the description of the #34 property in the National Register:</p><p></p><blockquote style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">This large residence was built by Samuel Tarbell Ames (1810-1897),
probably around 1890, as he is listed as owner on the 1892 Map. He was
a Boston businessman who summered in New Ipswich, presumably before he
built this house, as his wife was Mary Hartwell Barr, a daughter of Dr.
James Barr, who lived at #33 across Appleton Common, and a sister of
George Lyman Barr and Caroline Frances Barr, and whose cousin Elizabeth
Keyser, lived at #30. The house then passed to Samuel's son, James Barr
Ames (1846-1910), who was an Assistant Professor and Dean of the Harvard
Law School. He was esteemed for his teaching and writing on legal
matters. He took a great interest in Appleton Academy, serving as
Trustee, and his widow donated this house to the Academy in 1912. It
served as a boarding house for teachers and students until it reverted
to private ownership.
For a short time from 1969-74 it again served as a dormitory, when the
Academy served as a private boarding school again, before passing into
public ownership.</blockquote><h2 style="text-align: left;">Location </h2><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgmqLUC1VXg_PQ3XGd1N8sqPycV35k7uIS1DyEwCCGaLZ9R1FDcfOuOv_zqp3M8foG3cnztMXdOIwB_3lQL8zbUTifaOoLK33ZI7DhzkcYJjtXZ-j1JhM2DhWc_LeiVNA5QSbSjOIl0vSd2Z5QQb214pri5952Eodl9cdTMQan2XZQEpIbi04l869mzkQ=s1612" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="View of New Ipswich Center Village" border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="1612" height="406" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgmqLUC1VXg_PQ3XGd1N8sqPycV35k7uIS1DyEwCCGaLZ9R1FDcfOuOv_zqp3M8foG3cnztMXdOIwB_3lQL8zbUTifaOoLK33ZI7DhzkcYJjtXZ-j1JhM2DhWc_LeiVNA5QSbSjOIl0vSd2Z5QQb214pri5952Eodl9cdTMQan2XZQEpIbi04l869mzkQ=w640-h406" title="View of New Ipswich Center Village" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This a view of New Ipswich Center village taken from the Country Club. Center village is bounded roughly by Turnpike Road, Porter Hill Road, Main Street, Route 123A, Preston Hill Road, Manley Road and King Road.</p><p>This is the description of the #83 property in the National Register:</p><p></p><blockquote><i><b>This house was built, probably about 1835, by Charles Shedd, who was
Preceptor of New Ipswich Academy from 1835 until 1841. The Academy was
then housed next door to the south at #84. Under his leadership the
Academy's first dormitory, Students Hall, now disappeared, was built
just north of this house. The next owner was Charles Keyes Bullard
(1801-1860), who owned it by 1850. It then passed to his sister,
Clarissa Granger (1802-1879), and then to her daughter, Martha, and her
husband, William A. Preston (1834-1902). Preston was also Perceptor of
the Academy, from 1874 until his death, for 28 years. In 1853 the
Academy had moved to its new location (#31) on Appleton Common and been
renamed Appleton Academy to honor the generous contributions of Samuel
Appleton. William's son, John (1860-1930) inherited the house and lived
in it until his death. During the 1940's the house became a home for
wayward boys, known as "Hillsboro Haven". It then became a nursing home
for a short time before being converted in the 1950's into a retirement
home known as "Friendship Manor".</b></i></blockquote><p>I'm curious about the history of it as a home for "wayward boys". A friend mention that that abuse took place. A Google search revealed nothing. <div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">I've spent decades trying to keep squirrels off my bird feeders with little success. I've a had a variety of squirrel-proof feeders with little success including the one that would spin them around. That one would go haywire and spin wildly at random times. One of my feeders had a cantilevered perch and when I opened the top to add more seed a chipmunk jumped out. Eventually a bear ate it. I wired up my feeders to a fence charger which was successful until the squirrels started wearing little rubber boots.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I found this birdfeeder at the Green Center recycle center in New Ipswich and I can honestly say that that it highly effective. I don't believe any feeder can be 100% squirrel proof, but this one is great. I'm not sure if it will accommodate multiple heavier birds. It is well worth the zero cost.</div>

That is not the case when dealing with analog photography. It is amazing how quickly one forgets where and when a photos was taken. <div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">I was going through the photo archives when I came across this photo of Pickles taken in November 2004. He was the toughest cat we ever had, gentle with humans but deadly for rodents. He loved to be outdoors and was impervious to weather. One time he disemboweled a rabbit that was almost the same size as he was.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
He shared the home with our cat Buster who was a bully but Pickles had none of that and held him off when he had to.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
One day he didn't return but I know he went down fighting.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">A photo was posted on the Facebook page <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/newipswichlife/" target="_blank">Life in New Ipswich</a> that reminded me that five years ago we got a trick and not a treat for Halloween. A Halloween Nor'easter dumped 16 inches of snow on New Ipswich, Since the trees still had foliage and the ground was still unfrozen, a lot of trees uprooted and we had extensive power outages. We haven't had a repeat since. Here is a look back.</div>

My cousin's husband attended the school and took us for a tour in October of 2006.</span></div>

Opening its doors in 1868, this Carter Street treasure was Connecticut’s last operating one-room schoolhouse when it closed in 1957. Acquired by the Society in 2003, it was restored thanks to the generous support of Society members, nonprofit groups, former students and friends.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border-color: rgb(230, 230, 230); border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 1.5rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Longtime Schoolmistress Mary J. Kelley, who studied there in the 1890s and went on to earn a teaching certificate, was a “loving but strict” presence there for 47 years. The Kelley family home is just a stone’s throw from her classroom.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border-color: rgb(230, 230, 230); border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 1.5rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Like the Rock School, the small room centered around the pot-bellied stove, with rows of slanted desks screwed to the wood-plank floor. Some 30 children from first through fifth grades received instruction under the watchful eyes of Miss Kelley. Former students recall that she encouraged independent study, offered remedial lessons and provided individual instruction.</div>
<div style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border-color: rgb(230, 230, 230); border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 1.5rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Each day began with the flag-raising and Bible readings. In fact, Miss Kelley’s core values centered on prayer, patriotism and discipline. But fun was built into the day as well: Old-fashioned games, nature walks, and marching around the room with a book on your head to practice posture. - <a href="http://nchistory.org/our-buildings/the-little-red-schoolhouse-1868/" target="_blank">New Canaan Historical Society</a></div>

Good morning ,welcome to the fall season the best time of the year.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When we were kids we use to rake leaves just to have a big pile to jump into. I intend to do that this year. I still rake them the old fashioned way.</div>

Back in the "old days" we disposed of the leaves by burning them. I intentionally made the fire as smokey as possible because I liked the way it looked. Wet leaves helped with this strategy. This photo was taken of my cousins burning leaves in their mother's garden, which help to recycle nutrients to the soil. Worries about air quality have banned this practice but I still remember the distinctive smell. My dad once tried to help the process along by using some gasoline. Thankfully that only resulted in some singed eyebrows.<br />
