Image size for online display

I was experimenting with different images sizes for online display. Google gives you free storage of images as long as you don't exceed 2048 pixels on the longest side. Facebook caught up with them with a default of 2048 pixel size but they continue their practice of removing meta-data.

These photos were uploaded to Flickr at 256, 512, 1024, 2048 and the original 4608 pixels size. The larger images have been rendered to fit in the blog, but these images can be downloaded to assess the quality differences.

2048 pixels seems to be the clear winner, free storage and it looks good.
